Utility Foreman

Location: Chantilly, Virginia

Independence Excavating, Inc., a nationally recognized industry leader in challenging site development, demolition, environmental remediation and concrete crushing seeks to fill the position of a Utility Foreman for completion of projects from start to finish. Handles all field related activities including managing crews, scheduling, materials, and subcontractors. Position offers full benefits including healthcare and vehicle. A Utility Foreman is responsible for various functions including, but not limited to:

  • Read, understand and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Review and understand detailed list of Subcontracts and Purchase Orders along with contacts with Project Manager prior to the start of the job
  • Coordinate construction activities with local officials (engineering, service departments, fire, police, zoning, etc.) to keep Independence in good standing with the local government and residents
  • Coordinate subcontractors and material deliveries. Release all pre-purchased materials. Review all shipping inventory before signing packing slip
  • Timely and complete submission of time, receipts, and extra work forms
  • Responsible for general and specific safety practices, following company safety manual procedures, and cooperating with our safety representative in a positive pro-active manner
  • Responsible for ensuring that company maintains profit margin on job
  • Monitor Subcontractor / Supplier costs
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must effectively manage work forces including Operators, Teamsters, and Laborer if applicable
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with employees, external vendors, owners and general contractors
  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent is required. Additional construction certifications or training preferred.
  • Five years previous related experience is required
  • Must have strong organizational skills in order to handle the variety of tasks assigned
  • Must develop positive working relationships with owners and project engineers as well as local government offices
  • Traveling is required
